How I Made $400 in 10 Hours Doing UberEats

The Lore

This is How I Made 400 dollars in 10 hours doing UberEats.
I was getting pretty low on cash being a recent grad, paying for my car, an apartment, plenty of loans, etc. I was debating on getting a second job on the weekends to make up for my lack of financial resources, it was tough, I had already worked 2 jobs my entire university degree, I didn’t want to do it. My fiancée had the great idea that I should try and take up driving for Uber, believe me I was super hesitant, I had a lot of skepticism, severely doubted my car and my ability to drive and deliver orders. But nevertheless I signed up, Brandon the green Uber Driver!

First Impressions

Well lo and behold there was an opportunity currently running on uber for every 5 deliveries you get $40, this at the time greatly appealed to me and was a major factor in my commitment to trying it. So I go through the process of uploading all of the documents, I get approved. The next day I get in my car anxiously awaiting what the future holds as I press the “Go Online” button, my heart racing, my fiancée accompanying me in the passenger seat, a crappy provigo insulated bag tucked away in the corner. We wait…. it’s prime time and still no order, something must be wrong, I go to pick up my phone and ding ding ding, I get a $4 Harvey’s order, I was as you can imagine extremely confused, happy and underwhelmed. I accept the order, bolt off to Harvey’s, keep in mind I have no clue how the app works, I get the order figure out you have to slide to verify it, I get the drink and the bag. But I made a critical mistake when I got the drink and the bag, I stuck them both in the insulated Provigo bag and as soon as I picked up the Provigo bag, the drink spilled all over the Harvey’s bag, bottom of the bag is all wet, there’s Coca Cola all over the lid, the straw is soaked, so I disposed of the straw. I knew that when I were to deliver this order, I was not going to get a tip, lesson learned.

A Realistic Breakdown of How I Made $400 in 2 Weekends

After that initial painful first delivery, the rest of my deliveries for the night went extremely well, I did 10 in total within 3 hours and 20 mins, made $133.35 out of that alone just to give you an idea. The following day I did another 5 trips to gain $73.81 in an hour and a half. My fiancée was a great help, she helped me navigate, set up the app so I wouldn’t have any problems, and pulled out google maps when Uber’s navigation sent me down random alleyways.

The following week after yet another promotion dropped for every 5 deliveries you get $40, I did 15 trips in 4 hours and 45 minutes to net $203.74 in total. Because of the promotions I was able to reach that $400 mark in just 2 weekends, spending a little under 10 hours. I have no doubt that without the promotions I would not have made nearly that much, it would’ve been more like half that amount, which still isn’t all that bad at $20/hr. Depending on what vehicle you drive your profit could go up or down, because of the reduced/added cost of fuel, so consider that before being a delivery driver. I drive a 2015 Kia Forte EX, it gets decent gas mileage but it’s most certainly not in top shape and could be doing better, there’s superior alternatives when it comes to reliability, efficiency, so keep that in mind when considering a gig delivering food.

Disclaimer

I am not counting the time I drove back and forth between the deliveries, because often times it wasn’t that long, do you count the time you drive to work and back? Most often no, so I didn’t count it. I did put in roughly $40 to do all of this for gas and I did purchase a bag that wouldn’t give me a headache delivering food and was large enough to accommodate food properly. What I will say from what I’ve noticed, get both a regular delivery bag and a pizza delivery bag because a majority of the pizza orders had very large payouts and didn’t require a long distance to travel, unfortunately for me I don’t have a pizza bag so I did have to let those orders timeout as my regular bag could not hold anything larger than a medium pizza in width.

Final Thoughts

There’s definitely an art to the times you deliver, for example there are peak hours which can get you multiple add ons to the order you already have going and that’s what I banked on to get those opportunities out as quick as possible. I would pick up one order and immediately get another and more often than not they would be in the same area, so I didn’t have to travel far to get those orders going. Overall I would say I had a great experience delivering for Uber, yes their navigation can be terrible at times. I often got the GPS doing some crazy 360’s or zooming out to the point I couldn’t tell where I was going. There hasn’t been an opportunity like the ones I got in the last couple of weeks, so don’t expect to be making $400 over and over week in and week out. It’s worth it when they come on and you have the time to get them done. I would recommend it to someone who has a decent vehicle for it and a town/city that is active and not overcrowded with too many drivers.
